Emission Factor Database Management

This section explains how to find and access the secondary databases available to your organization through Terrascope, and how to manage which version should be used for each measurement.

Updated over a week ago

Access to Emission Factor Database

  1. Navigate to the “Database” tab in the Emission factors section in your Terrascope platform

  2. Apply filters, and View available EF databases as tiles on the right of the screen, each representing a database with a specific version.

  3. Tiles include descriptions (except for custom EFs) to help you understand the overview of the database and the number of EFs available based on the filtered condition.

  4. Clicking a tile redirects you to the individual emission factors list for that database version.

  5. You can view additional details about the database by clicking the three dots in the top right corner of the tile, then clicking on “View”.

ℹ️NOTE: The list of available EF databases depends on your organization’s platform configuration. Not all databases may be available to every user.

Description

Notes

EF Source

Select one or more emission factor databases (e.g. Ecoinvent or custom sources) when you know which source best matches your needs.

The list of sources updates dynamically based on other filters or search terms. Multiple sources can be selected at the same time.

Version

Select the database version most relevant to your search.

Only versions matching other active filters are shown.

EF Location

Filter the database which contains emission factors that correspond to the specific geographical location where the activity takes place.

This list is static and does not change with other filters.

EF Type

Choose between “System EF” (typically secondary databases) and “Custom EF” (created by users or organizations based on primary data).

When “Custom EF” is selected, search results will only display custom emission factor databases.

Tags

Filter custom emission factors by user-defined tags to organize and categorize them further.

Search results can be filtered to show data sources containing emission factors with specific tags.

Tags are only available for custom emission factors, not for system EFs.

EF Unit

Select the measurement unit (such as kg, m³, kWh, USD). This should match the unit of business activity data or activity data may be converted to align with the emission factor units.

Search results can be filtered to show data sources containing emission factors with specific units.

Measurement Year

Filter databases by the year of measurement which the EFs from the databases are applied to.

This feature makes it easy to identify which database and version are being used for a specific measurement year.

Emission Factor Database Version Control

  1. Click the three dots in the top right corner of the tile, then click “View” to where you can view additional details about the database.

  2. Click “Edit version control”

  3. Add or remove the years in which the selected version of the database can be used for measurement.

  4. Click “Save version control” to confirm your changes.

  5. Additional reminder to pop-up to tell you; All future calculations and recalculations for these years, including any newly added year, will use the database as the reference source when matching emission activities to emission factors.
