Bulk Creation of Custom Emission Factors
You can create your own emission factors using your organization’s primary data by completing the provided Excel template and uploading it to the system.
NOTE: At present, custom emission factor creation is only available through this bulk upload method, which is best suited for managing multiple entries at once. For creating individual emission factors one by one, a simpler and more intuitive online entry option will be introduced in a future release.
Step 1: Download the Template
Click “Add Emission Factors” in the top-right corner and select “Create in Bulk.” Alternatively, you can navigate to the “Data” section in the left-side panel and choose “Add Emission Factors.”
Download the provided template.
Step 2: Populate the Template
Complete all mandatory columns; including Emission Factor Name,Emission Factor Description, Emission Factor Source, Emission Factor Version, Emission Factor Location, Emission Factor Value, Emission Factor Unit (/kgCO2e).
The fields “Emission Factor Source” and “Emission Factor Version” must be entered in the format x.x.x (e.g. 1.1.0 or 23.2.1). You may choose your own naming convention for the source and version (e.g., “Supplier XXX EFs” - 0.0.1).
Verify the accuracy of the data to prevent upload errors.
Data Accuracy Guidelines:
✅Use actual measured data whenever possible
✅Provide clear and standardized naming for the Emission Factor Name
✅Use consistent and descriptive naming for the Emission Factor Source
✅Apply a clear, structured numbering format for the Emission Factor Version
✅Maintain consistent units of measurement
✅Include source documentation references wherever available
✅The system supports uploads of up to 20,000 emission factors per file. If more are required, repeat the upload process.
❌Avoid estimated data unless supported by a transparent and defined methodologyAvoid estimated data without clear methodology
❌Don't leave any mandatory fields blank
Step 3: Upload the Template
Return to the “Add emission factors”.
Upload your completed template file.
Please select ‘EF type’ either ‘Primary EF data’ or ‘Secondary EF data’.
Choose ‘Primary EF data’ if the emission factors (EFs) you are uploading are original data collected and created by your organization. Select ‘Secondary EF data’ if you are uploading EFs obtained from an external secondary database that is not already available on the Terrascope platform.
The information you upload will appear in the list of available emission factors. Primary EF data will be displayed as ‘Custom EF’, while secondary EF data will be shown as ‘System EF’ in the list
Uploaded files appear in the entry list below until processed.
Once processed, they move to the “ingested” section, providing a record of all uploaded EFs.
🚧Handling custom emission factor template upload error
If errors occur, download a text file with basic error messages indicating problematic rows or columns.
Correct errors in your template and re-upload as needed.
Step 4: Verification
Successfully uploaded custom emission factors will appear in the Emission Factors source of the platform and can be searched or filtered in the same way as standard emission factors.
The “Emission Factor Source” and “version” values you defined in the template will also be searchable as part of the database, clicking the tile directs you to a list of custom emission factors created.
ℹ️NOTE: Custom EFs are prioritized in search results if they match your query
Adding Custom EFs to the existing source you created
Follow the steps 1 to 3 outlined in the populate the template.
In the Emission Factor Source field, enter the name and version of the existing source to which you want to add new custom emission factors.
Follow the steps in the process of upload.
After upload, the additional emission factors will be available under the specified source.
