Water and Waste Activities Management

Updated this week

Terrascope's Water and Waste Activity management functionality streamlines data input, data validation, and reporting the organization’s water consumption and waste generation. It ensures organizations gain clear visibility into these critical environmental factors by the platform’s comprehensive data visualization capability.

1. Collecting Water and Waste Data

The basic process, from data collection through validation to measurement, follows the same principles as GHG emission measurement. Create a data collection task and assign data custodians. Custodians should download the template, fill in the required information, and upload it to the platform. The platform will then automatically validate the data and calculate the results.

2. Creating a New Measurement Project

  • Navigate to the Measurement section in the left sidebar.

  • Click on New to create a new measurement project.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to set the measurement year and input a name and optional description for your measurement.

Setting Up Water and Waste Data Tasks

  • When prompted to select a data template, choose the “Waste and Water” template.

  • You can opt to set up a task for Water, Waste, or both at once.

  • (Optional) Allow data custodians to provide their own raw data.

3. Downloading and Filling Data Templates

  • Within your measurement workspace, go to the required task (Water or Waste).

  • Download the template from the platform interface.

  • Complete all mandatory fields in the template. Typical information includes;

    • Waste:

      • Start date

      • End date

      • Business unit

      • Site tag

      • Location

      • Waste category (Waste diverted from disposal, Waste directed to disposal)

      • Waste type (Hazardous/Scheduled waste, Non-hazardous/General waste)

      • Waste type detail (Battery, Chemicals, Contaminated Container, Contaminated Rag/Paper, Contaminated Soil, Coolant, Medical Waste, Oils, Oil Filter, Paint/Thinners/Solvent, Refrigerant, Sludges & Filter Waste)

      • Waste management (Preparation for reuse, Recycling, Other)

      • Other waste management

      • Waste quantity

      • Waste quantity unit (Metric Ton (t), Cubic Meters (m3), Liters (L))

      • Vendors Info

      • Data source

      • Remarks

    • Water:

      • Start date

      • End date

      • Business unit

      • Site tag

      • Water use (Water withdrawal, Water discharge, Water recycled)

      • Water source / destination (The source of water that is being used.)

      • Location

      • Total volume of water (kL)

      • Data source

      • Remarks

ℹ️ By collecting data using the Terrascope template, you can report waste in line with GRI-compliant metrics, including waste generated, waste diverted from disposal, and waste directed to disposal.

4. Uploading Data and Validation

  • Upload the completed template file back to the platform using the Upload feature within your selected task.

  • Wait for the system to run validation and auto-calculations.

  • Ensure all errors (if any) flagged during validation are resolved before completing your submission.

Please refer to this sanction in the GHG emission measurement guide to the instructions on how to resolve the issue.

Viewing and Analyzing Results

  1. Go to the Data section and click on Water and Waste Activities in the left sidebar.

  2. Select the relevant year to bring up your reporting period.

  3. The top of the screen summarizes your overall water consumption and waste generated for the selected timeline.

  4. Below, you’ll see a detailed activity list for all recorded water and waste activities for this period.

Utilize Filtering and Grouping

  1. Use the filter panel to refine your results by parameters such as:

    • Type (water or waste)

    • Category and sub-category (e.g., Waste directed to disposal, water discharge, Hazardous, non-hazardous waste etc)

    • Waste management method (e.g., incineration, landfill, recycling)

    • Business unit, location, or specific measurement project etc.

    • These filters help you focus on relevant operations and get granular with your analysis.

    • Some filters may be designed for use with either waste or water only.

  2. Group activities by any of the displayed parameters for better comparison and reporting.

  3. You can view details of a Waste or Water activity by clicking the activity line; the information will appear in the right panel.
